How to Find Student Accommodation in Germany (Real Tips That Actually Work)

Finding student accommodation in Germany can be challenging, especially in popular cities like Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, or Frankfurt. High demand, limited supply, and short response times often make the process stressful. However, with the right platforms and a smart approach, it is absolutely possible to find a good place to live.

Best Websites to Find Student Accommodation in Germany

WG-Gesucht (Most Popular)

WG-Gesucht is the most popular platform for shared flats (WGs) and single rooms. It is especially useful for students and young professionals.

I personally found my apartment through WG-Gesucht, which shows that with the right strategy, it really works.

Immobilienscout24

Immobilienscout24 is one of Germany’s largest real estate platforms. It is mainly used for private apartments and long-term rentals.

Kleinanzeigen

Kleinanzeigen (formerly eBay Kleinanzeigen) is widely used for apartments, sublets, and temporary accommodation. Always be cautious and avoid paying anything before visiting the property.

Facebook Groups

Facebook groups are also very useful, especially city-specific ones such as:

Wohnung in Berlin
Wohnung in Munich
Wohnung in Hamburg
WG Zimmer Deutschland

Many landlords and WG members post directly in these groups, making them worth checking daily.

A Small Tip That Makes a HUGE Difference

When you message landlords or WG members, always write a proper introduction. Most people reply only when they feel your message is genuine and detailed.

What Your Message Should Include

Who you are (student / job / academic background)
Your preferred move-in date
Whether you have pets or not
Your financial situation (savings or student job to show rent reliability)
Your hobbies and lifestyle
Why you are interested in that specific room or apartment
How long you plan to stay

Short messages like “Is this room available?” usually get ignored 😅 Taking time to write a clear and honest introduction significantly increases your chances.

Important Safety Tips

Never transfer money before visiting the apartment or signing a contract
Avoid offers that seem too cheap for the location
Ask for a rental contract (Mietvertrag)
Verify the landlord or main tenant when possible

Final Advice

Be patient and consistent. Apply daily, personalize your messages, and do not get discouraged by rejections or no replies. With the right approach, you will find a suitable place.

Good luck with your house hunt! 🏡🇩🇪💛
